Woo! It’s the Autobahn, baby!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

If passed, this would make Michigan the second state east of the Mississippi with a 75 mph speed limit, after Maine and would set a precedent for other Eastern states to follow. Realistically, it’s basically the first because it’s actually a populated state and not hidden away in the corner like Maine.

Check out this interactive map of the current speeds of the Union:

I-94 is already 82. It’s not posted, but it’s been tested plenty.

Sweet, that means we can legally drive 85 everywhere!!

-Michigan driver, if you’re going slower than 80 in a 70 you’re going to get run over. We drive fast......

Problem is, with the state of Michigan highways, that speed will really beat up on your car.

75 of those units converts to 120 km/h. They’re increasing their speed limit to 120?

Having driven in Maine (and the other New England states) this summer I thought the speed limits were low. So you’re telling me they were relatively high?

well, the areas where the limit will increase is said to be “rural limited-access” highways, so it’s not going to be in the populated areas. probably it’ll stay the same south of Shelby Twp, east of Milford and Canton, and north of Rockwood.

Yes. Most of the US has rather low limits, since we don’t believe in educating our driving population or requiring any car control skills.

65 mph is typical on most interstates, with speeds between 45 and 60 in denser urban areas. A few states have moved rural limits up to 70 mph, and in northern Maine (where one can drive for 30 minutes without seeing another car at times), 75 mph finally arrived recently.

And the cops do not give a damn about 80 in a 70.

That’s just painful.

bring it!

Now we’ll be able to do 85 without getting pulled over! Seriously if you’re not at 80 on one of the major highways around Detroit you’re pissing someone off.

For all those curious, it’s not just rural northern Michigan at 70mph, if you’re outside of a major city limit it’s 70.

It is. But that being said...

I should mention that no cop will touch you at 120, 90% wouldn’t consider it worthwhile at 125 unless it was the end of the month, and the point where most will start hauling you in appears to be around 130, though even that can be pretty loose.

Basically, the limits are retarded and the cops know it, and besides they know that BECAUSE the limits are so low, the courts are flooded. Anyone who goes to fight a ticket WILL either get off or get a reduction for any offense less than 20% over (though it’s not in writing), hence why the lower limit is 120 instead of 100. Besides that you don’t get points until 16km/h over... so a favorite trick is to nab you for something that could be expensive and then let you off with a reduction to 50 over. They rake in $50 a pop and they know you probably won’t fight it since they knocked it down at the side of the road.

Barring local knowledge of course. The London area is particularly sticky.

As a Michigan resident and multiple time per year traveler of the autobahn I can say 100% it’s idiots like those commenting who cause the accidents, not the speed.

Pay attention, don’t be timid, and be smart and 125 mph is zero issue for most cars (Ford Fusion wagon rental for example)... granted Michigan needs to take way better care of the roads but that’s another matter.

These bills are the product of 10 years hard work, led by the safety department of the Michigan State Police. They will improve safety on almost every type of Michigan road, both urban and rural. And they will stop many of the for-profit speed traps that target the safest drivers on the road for revenue. Hopefully the Governor understands the issues well, and will sign the bills.

Just not by the airport. The local cops will pop you for a few mph over.

Yeah, it seems that the further you get away from Detroit, the more lax the enforcement is.
